Recently, LARKR announced its donation of free and subsidized mental health services to the extended Parkland community in the wake of the shooting at Stoneman Douglas. Following our offer a few South Florida mental health professionals have raised some important concerns… And they are right to be concerned, there are a lot of shady providers out there who are not focused on your best interests.

Like it or not, Parkland has become the ground zero of the death of 17 of our own, as well as the national gun debate.

I’d like to address some of the concerns and circulating myths directly and openly:

  1. MYTH: LARKR is a California company, and therefore their therapists can not legally work with people in Florida.
FACT: While LARKR is a Delaware corporation headquartered in California, this has no relevance on therapists in the LARKR network being able to provide services in Florida. We ensure that all users are only matched with therapists licensed and insured to provide services in the state where they are located, including those in Florida. LARKR’s licenced professionals have exactly the same credentials as your local Psychotherapist, Psychologist, or Psychiatrist. In fact, they may even be based nearby.
  2. MYTH: LARKR is taking clients away from my Florida therapy business.
FACT: There are simply not enough local therapists with appropriate expertise to serve the needs of everyone affected in the community, as well as all of their friends and family across the country. Further, this isn’t about you or your business, this is about getting everyone the mental and emotional support they need, when they need it.
  3. MYTH: Video based therapy is not as good as in-person therapy.
FACT: For many people, particularly 13-24-year-olds, clinical outcomes from video-based therapy may actually be better than from in-person therapy. It is also more accessible to those who struggle with transportation challenges.
  4. MYTH: LARKR is extracting money from our community.
FACT: None of LARKR’s investors are from Florida, and we are paying Florida based therapists to provide these services. Therefore, we are actually injecting capital into the state’s economy.
  5. MYTH: LARKR doesn’t understand what we are going through.
FACT: Two of the three founders of LARKR are from Parkland, their daughter (now in college) previously attended Douglas. And all of the professionals on the LARKR app are licensed therapists. You can even select those who specialize in areas of the particular areas of concern you are facing right now.

I hope this dispelling of myths around LARKR’s Parkland offer has been helpful for you and that you will share with any fellow friends who have been impacted by the tragedy, but may be hesitant to use the service. We assure you that LARKR is here to assist Parkland, its residents and anyone impacted by this tragedy in this time of need.
